Surface-mounted systems can still suit certain applications, particularly commercial vehicles where practicality takes priority. They can also be useful when bumper construction makes flush mounting less straightforward. The trade-off is appearance. They are more visible and generally less integrated.

The usual problem is not the idea of parking sensors. It is poor execution.
The first mistake is incorrect sensor spacing. If the sensors are too close together, coverage overlaps badly and readings can become less useful. Too far apart and you create blind spots.
