A stolen vehicle is rarely taken because a thief has found a weak door lock. On many late-model cars, the attack happens through the vehicle’s electronics: keyless entry relay theft, diagnostic-port access, CAN bus injection or cloned keys. The future of car theft prevention is therefore not one clever device. It is a properly planned combination of physical security, independent electronic immobilisation and a recovery system that is fitted correctly.
For UK owners, the change matters. Vehicles are more connected, more convenient and, in many cases, more vulnerable to organised thieves who understand how particular models are built. A factory alarm remains useful, but it was designed around a standard production vehicle. Extra layers fitted by a specialist make the vehicle harder to start, harder to move and easier to recover.
Why modern vehicle theft is changing
Older theft methods were often noisy and obvious. Forced entry, broken ignition barrels and hot-wiring left visible damage and took time. Current methods can be far quicker. A relay attack may extend the signal from a keyless fob inside a house. Diagnostic attacks can be used to programme a key or communicate with vehicle systems. On some vehicles, criminals target accessible CAN wiring and send commands that mimic legitimate messages.
This is why a visible steering lock, while worth having as a deterrent, should not be the entire plan. It can slow an opportunist down, but it does not prevent electronic starting methods. Equally, a tracker alone does not stop the initial theft. It improves the chance of recovery after the vehicle has gone.

The key development is the move away from relying solely on factory systems. Modern aftermarket security is designed to work independently of the original alarm and key system, adding authorisation requirements that a thief cannot simply bypass by gaining access to the vehicle network.
Digital CAN bus immobilisers
A digital CAN bus immobiliser is one of the strongest practical upgrades for many modern vehicles. It prevents the vehicle from starting or being driven until the authorised user enters a personal PIN sequence using existing controls, such as buttons on the steering wheel or dashboard. There is no additional keypad on display, no obvious fob to steal and no need to alter the vehicle’s normal appearance.
The important distinction is that a correctly selected immobiliser does more than interrupt a basic circuit. On modern cars, crude wiring interruptions can create fault codes, compromise vehicle functions or be identified by a determined thief. A vehicle-specific CAN system communicates with the vehicle architecture and is installed to prevent unauthorised drive-away without compromising normal use.
Installation quality matters as much as the product. Wiring should be secure, discreet and properly integrated, not left accessible behind a lower dash panel. The system also needs to suit the vehicle. A car, motorbike, van and commercial vehicle do not present the same risks or require the same fitting approach.
Tracker systems with a real recovery response
Tracking has moved well beyond checking a location on a phone. Insurance-approved systems can provide monitored theft alerts, driver recognition, movement alerts and support from a secure operating centre. Depending on the tracker category and insurer requirements, this may be essential for higher-value or commonly targeted vehicles.
A tracker is particularly valuable where a vehicle is parked away from home, used for work or carries specialist equipment. For a van owner, recovering the vehicle quickly may prevent the far larger loss of tools, stock and lost working time. For fleet operators, tracking can also support vehicle management, although security monitoring and fleet telematics are not automatically the same thing.
There are trade-offs. A basic self-monitored tracker may be suitable for a lower-risk vehicle, but it relies on the owner seeing an alert and reacting quickly. A monitored, insurance-approved option costs more but offers a stronger response when time is critical. It is worth checking your insurer’s wording before fitting anything, especially if a particular tracker category is a policy condition.
Keyless protection remains relevant
Keyless theft is not disappearing just because newer vehicles have improved their security. Owners should still treat key fobs as a potential point of exposure. Keeping keys away from external doors and windows, using a quality signal-blocking pouch, and checking the pouch remains effective are sensible precautions.
Some owners choose to disable passive entry through vehicle settings where possible. That can be a good option for a vehicle parked on a driveway in a high-risk area, although it reduces the convenience that keyless entry was bought for. There is no universal answer. A driver who uses the vehicle repeatedly throughout the day may prefer to retain passive entry and add stronger immobilisation instead.
Connected cars will bring better alerts and new attack surfaces
Remote apps, connected services and over-the-air updates will play a larger part in vehicle security. A vehicle may notify its owner of movement, unlocking, towing or an attempted start. Manufacturers can also identify weaknesses and deploy software changes more quickly than was possible with older vehicles.
That is useful, but connected features add another system to protect. App account passwords, email security, PINs and recovery details need the same attention as the physical key. If an account gives access to vehicle location, remote locking or other connected functions, weak login credentials are an avoidable risk.
The practical point is simple: do not assume a smartphone app replaces a security installation. Connected factory features are helpful, but they are not necessarily designed to stop model-specific theft methods. Independent protection remains valuable because it creates a separate obstacle.
Physical security still has a job to do
Electronic protection should be supported by visible, physical measures. Thieves prefer speed and low attention. A good steering wheel lock can make a vehicle less attractive than the one parked beside it. Driveway posts, gates and secure parking add further delay, particularly overnight.
For vans, physical protection needs more consideration. Standard door locks are often vulnerable, while the contents may be worth more than the vehicle itself. External security locks, internal deadlocks where appropriate, alarm protection for the load area and a tracker form a sensible package. Tool storage should also be secured inside the vehicle, not simply left loose behind the rear doors.
Motorbikes need their own strategy. A disc lock, chain and ground anchor remain effective because a bike can otherwise be lifted into another vehicle. A compact tracker and immobiliser add a recovery and starting-prevention layer without relying only on a noisy alarm.
Choosing the right protection package
The best system depends on the vehicle, where it is kept and how it is used. A performance car parked on a private drive has a different risk profile from a work van left at a railway station or a premium SUV regularly parked on the street. Theft patterns are also model-specific, so a recommendation should account for known vulnerabilities rather than follow a one-size-fits-all package.
As a starting point, consider four questions:
Can the vehicle be started through keyless, diagnostic or CAN bus methods?
Does your insurer require an approved tracker, and is the required category specified?
Is the vehicle normally kept on a driveway, street, commercial yard or public car park?
Would the loss of tools, equipment or business use create a larger problem than the vehicle value alone?

Vehicle crime will continue to adapt, but thieves still work to a basic calculation: time, noise, risk and reward. Make your vehicle difficult to start, difficult to remove and traceable if it is taken. That practical combination remains the best way to stay ahead.
