How to Prevent Keyless Relay Theft Properly

A keyless vehicle can be taken from outside your house without a window being broken or a key being physically stolen. To prevent keyless relay theft, you need to deal with the wireless signal from the key, but that is only one part of proper vehicle security. A relay attack is quick, quiet and designed to exploit a convenience feature that many owners understandably assume is safe.

The right approach is layered protection. Secure the key at home, use sensible parking habits, and fit security equipment that stops a thief driving away even if they gain access to the vehicle.

What keyless relay theft actually is

Most keyless-entry systems allow the vehicle to detect a nearby key fob and unlock when you approach. The key does not need to be pressed. In a relay theft, two criminals use electronic relay devices to extend that short-range communication.

One device is held near the vehicle while the other is taken close to the key, often through a front door, window or external wall. The equipment passes the signal between them, making the vehicle believe its genuine key is beside it. The doors can unlock and, on some vehicles, the engine can be started and driven away.

It is not the same as cloning a key. The criminals are borrowing the live signal while the key remains inside your property. That is why cars parked on driveways, close to a house, can be particularly exposed.

Manufacturers have introduced improved key technology on newer models, including motion-sensitive fobs that go to sleep when left still. However, the level of protection varies by make, model year and key type. Never assume a vehicle is protected simply because it is new.

Start with the key fob at home

A Faraday pouch or properly screened key box is the simplest first line of defence. It blocks radio signals so a relay device cannot communicate with the key. Keep every key fob in it, including the spare. A spare key left in a hallway drawer can defeat the protection provided for the main key.

Do not place keys on a table beside the front door, on a windowsill or near an external wall. Moving them further into the property reduces the likelihood of a relay device reaching them, although distance alone is not a guaranteed solution. Signal strength, property layout and the equipment being used all make a difference.

Faraday products need checking, not blind trust. Place the key inside the pouch or box, stand next to the vehicle and try to unlock it in the normal way. If the car opens, the item is not blocking the signal effectively or has not been closed correctly. Repeat the test periodically, especially with a pouch that has been folded, worn or left in a hot car.

Some owners choose to disable passive entry through the vehicle settings or ask a dealer whether the feature can be switched off. This can be worthwhile, but it may still leave remote locking active and it is not available on every vehicle. It is a useful measure, not a replacement for physical key shielding and vehicle-based security.

Prevent keyless relay theft with layered security

A Faraday pouch protects the signal at home. It does not protect the vehicle once a thief has gained entry by another method, nor does it help if keys are stolen during a burglary. For higher-risk vehicles, an additional immobiliser is usually the most effective next step.

A professionally installed CAN bus immobiliser prevents the engine from starting until the driver enters a personal code using existing vehicle controls. There is no separate keypad to find and no obvious modification for a thief to identify. The system works independently of the factory keyless start process, so access to the vehicle does not automatically mean access to the engine.

The quality of installation matters as much as the product. Modern vehicles use complex CAN networks, and poor wiring practices can create fault codes, battery drain or unreliable operation. A specialist should identify the correct vehicle architecture, install the system discreetly and verify that normal functions still operate as intended.

For some vehicles, a digital CAN immobiliser is the right answer. Others suit a more conventional additional immobiliser, particularly where the vehicle’s electrical system or intended use calls for a different approach. The best choice depends on the make, model, age and whether it is a privately owned car, van, motorcycle or fleet vehicle.

A tracker adds another layer rather than stopping theft outright. If the vehicle is moved, a suitable tracking system can provide location reporting and, depending on the product and monitoring package, support recovery. Insurance-approved tracking may also be required for particular high-value vehicles. Check the exact insurer requirement before fitting, as approval level, subscription and installation evidence can all matter.

Physical security still has a place. A visible steering wheel lock can make a thief think twice and adds time, noise and inconvenience. It is not a substitute for an immobiliser, but it makes the vehicle less attractive than an easier target nearby. Vans carrying tools may also need load-area locks and alarm protection, because protecting the cab alone does not protect the business inside.

Parking habits that reduce the opportunity

Where you park affects risk. A well-lit driveway, a garage or a location covered by a clear CCTV camera is preferable to leaving a vehicle on a dark road. Lighting and cameras are deterrents, but they should be treated as evidence and disruption measures rather than a complete security system.

If you use a driveway, avoid leaving the car in exactly the same position every night when practical. Keep the keys shielded, lock the vehicle manually and check it has actually locked. Some vehicles will not lock if a second key is detected nearby or if a door has not fully closed.

For keyless cars, do not rely on the audible beep or flashing indicators alone. Pull the door handle after locking, particularly if you are carrying bags or have been distracted. It takes seconds and can reveal a locking issue before it becomes a security problem.

Be careful with aftermarket accessories that connect to the vehicle’s diagnostic or electrical systems. Quality equipment fitted correctly is not the issue. Unnecessary exposed wiring, poorly protected diagnostic ports and low-grade alarm installations can all give an experienced thief useful information or an easier route into the vehicle.

Do not overlook diagnostic theft

Relay theft receives most of the attention because it is so easy to demonstrate, but it is not the only keyless-car threat. Criminals may also target the OBD port or access vehicle networks after breaking in, then programme a new key or manipulate electronic systems.

An OBD protection solution can restrict access to the diagnostic port, while a correctly selected immobiliser prevents a newly programmed key from being enough to start the engine. This is why a layered installation is stronger than buying one product based on a headline claim.

Owners of popular SUVs, performance models and premium vehicles should consider both attack routes. The same applies to commercial vehicles, where a stolen van creates lost work, replacement costs and potential tool claims as well as the vehicle itself.

Choosing the right level of protection

There is no single security package that suits every vehicle. A family hatchback parked in a locked garage has a different risk profile from a high-value SUV left on a driveway, or a tradesperson’s van parked outside overnight. The vehicle’s theft rate, parking location, insurance conditions and how long you plan to keep it should guide the decision.

For many owners, screened key storage and a visible steering lock are sensible immediate measures. For vehicles that are commonly targeted, an additional CAN bus immobiliser and an appropriate tracker give far better protection. If the vehicle carries tools or valuable equipment, add dedicated van locks and consider how the load area is secured as well.
